PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A longtime Philadelphia TV newscaster has announced plans to end his career after 50 years in broadcasting.

Jim Gardner has informed his colleagues at WPVI, an ABC-owned and operated station, that he will stop anchoring the 11 p.m. newscast in early January, but will remain as anchor of the 6 p.m. newscast. He will then retire from WPVI at the end of 2022, the station announced Wednesday.

Gardner has been the anchor of both news shows since May 11, 1977. He joined WPVI on June 1, 1976 and initially served as a reporter and anchor during its noon newscast.

Gardner received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1970, then worked briefly for WINS news radio in New York City and later WFAS radio in White Plains, New York. He began his television broadcast career at WKBW in Buffalo before joining WPVI.
